When you were first getting started with Invisalign, your dentist used advanced software to map the movements of your teeth. With proper use, your aligners should now be gradually shifting your teeth toward their proper positions. But what if things are not going according to the original treatment plan? What if your teeth do not seem to be moving like they should? There are a few explanations and potential solutions for this problem.
Why Invisalign Does Not Always Track
When it comes to Invisalign, the term “tracking” refers to whether your teeth are moving according to your dentist’s projections. Failure to track can have a number of explanations:
- Individual differences: The software used to plan Invisalign treatment is very sophisticated, and it accounts for all the most common factors that can influence tooth movement. However, there may be unique aspects of your jawbone or teeth that the software could not predict, leading to unexpected tooth movements or lack thereof.
- Your teeth are colliding: If there is not adequate space in your mouth for your teeth to move, they might clash with one another while Invisalign is trying to shift them, thereby hindering your treatment’s progress.
- Your trays are not seated: If your trays are properly seated, that means they fit snugly against your teeth. Ideally, there should be no visible gaps between the biting edge of your teeth and the tray. Poor seating can affect tooth movements.
- You are not wearing the trays enough: Invisalign only works when it is actually on your teeth. If you are not consistently meeting the 20 – 22 hour daily wear time, your tooth movements may not track.
What You Can Do
Talk to your Invisalign provider about your concerns. Depending on the cause of the failed tracking, they may recommend one of the following:
- Adjustments to your treatment plan: In some cases, new impressions and aligner trays are necessary to compensate for individual differences.
- Interproximal reduction: This is a minimally invasive procedure that involves removing a tiny bit of enamel from the sides of teeth. It reduces crowding in the mouth and facilitates proper movements.
- Chewing exercises: Invisalign providers often recommend the use of chewies (small foam devices) to help with proper seating of the trays.
- Increasing your wear time: Setting timers or using a tracking app may help you keep up with wearing your aligners for the required amount of time each day.
Invisalign is an effective orthodontic treatment, but it does not always go exactly as planned! Your care team can help you navigate challenges and get your teeth moving in the right direction.
