What Are the Dangers of Impacted Wisdom Teeth?

No one likes the idea of getting a tooth removed, so if your dentist recommends that you undergo extractions for your impacted wisdom teeth, you might be reluctant to commit to the procedure. This can be especially true if you are not in any pain. The reality is, though, that timely removal of impacted wisdom teeth can spare you from some serious problems! What dangers might arise without timely extractions? This blog post explains.

What Are Impacted Wisdom Teeth?

Impacted wisdom teeth are third molars, located at the very back of the mouth, which do not have enough space to fully emerge from the gumline or develop normally. They may remain trapped totally beneath your gums or only partially come through. This situation could lead to a range of complications.

Common Problems Associated with Impacted Wisdom Teeth

You might face several potential health issues if you do not address impacted wisdom teeth at the right time. Here are some of the most common complications that could arise:

  • Gum Disease: If you have fully or partially impacted wisdom teeth, you are at an increased risk of gum infection. The tissue surrounding these teeth is difficult to clean properly, which can allow bacteria to thrive and lead to an infection (gum disease). This could cause swelling, persistent discomfort, and unpleasant breath. Advanced gum disease may eventually lead to tooth loss and has also been connected to systemic conditions like heart disease and stroke.
  • Cavities: Partially impacted wisdom teeth are difficult to clean and can become prime spots for plaque and bacterial accumulation. Cavities can easily result.
  • Damage to Other Teeth: Impacted wisdom teeth may push against adjacent teeth, causing them to shift out of alignment. This pressure could result in crowding, misalignment, or even damage to the roots of nearby teeth.
  • Cysts and Tumors: Occasionally, cysts or noncancerous tumors will form around an impacted wisdom tooth. These growths can cause discomfort, swelling, and may damage your jawbone or nerves if they are left untreated.

Protecting Your Oral Health

You will not always experience noticeable symptoms when you have impacted wisdom teeth. However, problems with them can develop silently, and complications may arise suddenly. If your provider suggests wisdom tooth removal, you should take this advice seriously. Doing so can help you avoid future pain, costly procedures, and long-term health complications.

Impacted wisdom teeth can be dangerous! Ask your dentist if you should get them removed so you preserve your long-term oral health.
