Should You Replace Your Veneers? 4 Signs to Look For

Dental veneers have the potential to last for a long time. In fact, with proper care, they may endure for 15 – 20 years or longer! However, they do not last forever. If it has been a while since you underwent your smile makeover, you might be wondering if you should visit your cosmetic dentist to ask about replacing your old veneers with a new set. Here are some signs that you should book an appointment:

Your Veneers Are Chipped, Cracked, or Worn

Veneers are very durable, but they can incur damage as time passes. They may become worn down by years of chewing. They can also get chipped or cracked if you accidentally bite down on something too hard. Visible signs of damage are certainly a reason to visit your cosmetic dentist to ask about freshening up your smile.

Your Veneers Are Discolored

Most veneers are made of porcelain, which is highly resistant to stains. However, the material that is used to bind veneers to the teeth can become discolored. Or, if your veneers are made of composite rather than porcelain, they may be prone to stains.

In any case, noticeable discoloration can affect your confidence. Your dentist may be able to polish your current veneers or replace them altogether so you can once again feel free to show off your beautiful smile.

You Have Symptoms of a Dental Problem

The teeth beneath your veneers, as well as the gum tissue near them, remain vulnerable to problems. If you notice increased sensitivity or pain in any of your teeth that have veneers, it is possible that you have a cavity. Your dentist might have to remove your veneer in order to provide proper treatment. Afterward, it might be possible for your dentist to put your veneer back in place or provide you with a new one.

Similarly, if you have gum disease, it might be necessary to remove your veneers so your oral health can get back on track. Later, after you are well, you can refocus on the aesthetic aspects of your smile.

You Are Unhappy with Your Veneers

Patients may be unhappy with their veneers for a number of reasons. For example, you might have gotten bright white veneers when you were younger, but now you would prefer a subtler look. Or you might feel that your veneers are the wrong size or shape. Share your concerns with your cosmetic dentist. They might recommend that you get a new set of veneers that will meet your preferences. Be sure to bring photos of what you would like so your dental team can fully understand your wishes.

Is it time to replace your veneers? It might be! Talk to your dentist so they can help you enjoy a healthy, functional, and beautiful smile.
